Single and Double Glazing
You’ve most likely heard about single glazing, double glazing, etc. But what’s the difference?
A lot of older homes in Australia come with single glazed windows. You have one piece of relatively thin glass protecting you from the outside world.
It is cost-effective, requiring the least amount of work and materials to install. But it doesn’t do the best job of keeping the heat in or the noise out. So not always the best option especially if you are in a noisy area.
Now that you know what glazing is, double glazed windows are exactly that, two pieces of glass instead of one, separated by a small gap.
Remember we said that single glazed windows are cheap to install but allow heat to dissipate in winter? Double glazing is the solution. There is a stigma attached to double glazing as a “luxury”. By installing double-glazed windows, you’ll save a fortune on heating and airconditioning bills.
It is also much sturdier and better at keeping the volume from outside down.
Double glazing is becoming more common in homes due to its advantages. What was formerly considered too costly or useless is now recognised as a cost-effective and long-term solution.
How Do Double Glazed Windows Work?
If your windows are single glazed, you will notice that they are cold on the inside in the winter and may even build a coating of condensation. The inside panel of double-glazed windows remains at room temperature, preventing condensation.
Two pieces of glass are separated by a gap that might vary in size in double glazing. The space between the two panes of glass can be vacuum-sealed or filled with insulating gas.
The two panes are efficient in all seasons; they prevent heat from leaving in the winter while they lock the heat out in the summer.
Almost any window style can be double glazed, including sliding, folding, and French doors. We can even make your single glazed windows double glazed.
